Goldfish can survive under a wide range of water temperatures, but just because they can survive doesn’t mean they’re happy and stress free. Knowing your tank’s temperature is an important part of goldfish care. Most types of goldfish are healthiest at 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is convenient because that is the room temperature in most houses. If your house is cold and the water temperature falls to 55 degrees Fahrenheit or below, your goldfish’s metabolism will slow and your fish will stop eating and become very inactive. Above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, your goldfish’s metabolism will rise and your fish will need more food and will produce a lot more waste. At this temperature your tank will also become more dirty because algae and bacteria grow faster at these temperatures Different goldfish varieties, especially the fancy types, have different ideal temperatures – some goldfish can even be kept in outdoor ponds in the winter. So, be sure to ask about the ideal temperature range when you buy your goldfish.
