The notion that sticking needles into certain parts of the body can promote healing seems a strange idea and not at all obvious but that is what acupuncture is. Goodness only knows who came up with that idea or why they thought to try it but it appears to work.
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. First developed in China it has only really taken off in the West in the last few decades but it is becoming more accepted by medical practitioners and the general public. The positioning of the needles in acupuncture is crucial to the success of the treatment and takes years of training. Positioning the needles only millimetres away from the correct spot can mean failure of the procedure.
It is hard to understand why this should work but many people find that it does. Perhaps one day we will fully understand why this should be so but in the meantime, if your doctor suggests you try acupuncture then it would be well worth you while to give it a try.
